How are we to understand the new forms of nationalism and xenophobic politics that are reshaping our world order? Nationalism remains a potent form of political mobilization in countries across the globe. At its core, nationalism concerns belonging—the way people define, experience, and practice membership in a given social and political community. This class looks at why the invocation of this thing called nationalism is so unsettling, making belonging seem fraught and anxious for both self-proclaimed nationalists and their designated others alike. This class explores the current revival of xenophobic nationalism from a variety of actors and perspectives in order to analytically engage the anxieties that dominate the present global political landscape.
